The RMS Queen Mary was the first Ocean Liner to be named after a Queen of England and became the first Queen of the CUNARD Fleet.
Standing at 181 feet tall and 1019 feet long she was definately one of the largest ships of her time and despite her size moved at a respectable 28.5 knots.
During her Oceanliner carrer before WW2 the Queen Mary had a feirous rivalry with the French vessel, SS Normandie, both ships repeatably breaking each other's speed records until War broke out.
The Queen Mary is still around today but as a floating hotel and is the only Queen left from that time era as unfortunately her sister was destroyed by a fire in the 60s.
Actually the first Cunard liner named for a queen of England was Berengaria, wife of Richard I, the lionhearted, true she was Spanish but she was the English queen, which was about a decade before QM was even constructed.
the Queen Mary traveled at speeds up to 31.1 knots. It's incredible that a ship of her size can move that fast. She also sank HMS Curacoa after she rammed into her side. Queen Mary split the Curacoa in half and she sank in 6 minutes. The Queen Mary retreaded, her crew thinking that there were U-boats in the area. They left the survivors in the water.
